Sciton BBL & Resurfacing Lasers

Sciton’s BBL Heroic broad band light device is their latest rendition of their famous state of the art BBL device. This edition is more effective and more comfortable than previous forms of IPL and BBL.
It’s an excellent treatment of skin aging features such as brown spots, freckles, lentigos, and redness.

Their extensive Stanford University study proves that it leads to DNA repair and the reversal of the aging process. Treatments result in increased collagen formation.
Their Forever Young Protocol suggests a series of 3 treatments spaced one month apart and then followed by one to two treatments per year to maintain a glowing youthful appearance.

Sciton’s resurfacing layers employ cutting edge Erbium YAG laser technology to achieve significant improvements in lines, wrinkles, dyspigmentation, skin tightness, open pores and scars. We can use either the Profractional mode or the Contour TRl to improve these features of skin aging and boost collagen and elastin production.

SKIN RESURFACING

What is laser skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing involves removing the top layers of skin with an ablative laser. This allows rejuvenation of the skin resulting in fewer wrinkles, less sun damage and a markedly improved skin appearance. Dr. Joe Murphy has followed the development of skin resurfacing since he first observed Dr. August performing skin resurfacing with the earlier devices in Manchester in 1999. He has been fascinated by the evolution of skin resurfacing techniques and technologies during this time. He currently uses the Sciton Contour TRL Device which is a highly advanced device developed by the Sciton team over the past decades. This erbium fully ablative device allows very precise resurfacing which is tunable i.e. you can dial in the amount of ablation or coagulation that is desired for a particular patient or a particular area of a particular indication.

Is there downtime?

Of course full resurfacing of the face with a fully ablative laser results in downtime for the patient. However, in most patients the skin is completely re-epithelialised in 7 to 10 days. A relatively acceptable price to pay for such a comprehensive improvement in skin quality and appearance.

Is skin resurfacing painful?

It’s really important that patients are numbed prior to the procedure. Dr. Joe Murphy uses premedication with anxiolytics and then performs nerve blocks to ensure that the patient is comfortable for the procedure.

What happens after the resurfacing procedure?

The post-treatment protocol involves white vinegar soaks and the application of Vaseline several times per day. Also the patient must take a course of antivirals to prevent cold sore virus infection. The patient sends daily photos to Dr. Murphy via WhatsApp and the patient is reviewed every few days for LED therapy which helps with the healing process.

SCITON BBL HEROIC – QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What is the Sciton BBL Heroic laser?

The Sciton BBL Heroic is the world’s most advanced laser and light platform. Frequently termed ‘The Rolls Royce of Lasers’ its power and performance are unrivalled. The Sciton BBL Heroic delivers high-energy light into the skin that results in a huge boost in collagen resulting in a major glow up. This is combined with a reduction in red vessels (telangiectasia) and brown spots (solar lentigos) and a reduction in fine lines.

How long does it take?

It usually takes 30 minutes to perform.

Is it painful?

Most clients find it easily tolerable but sensitive clients or those with a lot of broken capillaries/red veins can always avail of 15 minutes of numbing cream.

Is there downtime?

Most clients experience little or no downtime. However those with a lot of red veins (telangiectasia) can experience some puffiness for a few days.

Do you only treat the face with Sciton BBL Heroic laser?

You can also treat the body with Sciton BBL Heroic. This is one of the advantages of the BBL Heroic as in addition to the face it can efficiently treat the neck, décolletage/decollete, body, arms and legs. Many patients have unsightly brown spots on their upper backs, shoulders and arms that they hate and BBL Heroic is a great way to treat this issue. Interestingly we frequently treat the bald scalp of men who often have unsightly brown spots in this area.

Can it be combined with other procedures on the day?

Yes it can be combined with Sciton Profractional erbium laser which is an ablative fractional laser. It can also be combined with a Nanopeel or a Micropeel on the day for added and synergistic benefits.

Do you need to do a series of treatments?

A course of 3 BBL Heroic treatments is recommended. However, amazingly we frequently see significant benefits after 1 treatment. Generally it is recommended after your 3 treatments to do 1 or 2 treatments per year as part of the Forever Young protocol.

Does the Sciton BBL Heroic do anything else?

Yes, the Sciton BBL Heroic has other modules which address skin laxity, skin texture and tone and inflammatory conditions such as acne and rosacea. Skin laxity is addressed by the Skintyte procedure. Skin texture and tone are addressed by the SkinSmooth procedure and acne and rosacea are addressed by the Forever Clear protocol. Interestingly many patients tell us that they no longer need to wear makeup after a few BBL Heroic treatments.

Are there any other benefits of the BBL Heroic device?

An important additional benefit of the Sciton BBL Heroic device is that it repairs sun-induced skin damage (photodamage). This benefit can be further bolstered by combining it with the Sciton Profractional laser. And if you really want to stack the treatments for amazing results, you can add on photodynamic therapy which involves applying ALA cream after the Profractional treatment and then putting the patient under LED red light for 30 minutes.

What is Sciton Contour TRL laser?

The Sciton Contour TRL laser is a fully ablative laser that removes the top layers of the skin down to the dermis. It is a highly precise and adjustable laser that results in significant skin tightening and significant erasure of wrinkles and resultant collagen production. It is tunable which means that in addition to ablation the doctor can also add in coagulation which allows for additional tightening and collagen production. The Sciton Contour TRL laser is ideally suited for use around the eyes and mouth where it results in dramatic improvement of lines and laxity.

What does Dr. Joe Murphy think about the Sciton BBL Heroic device?

After 30 years of treating dermatology patients and clients he is amazed by the power of this device and by the dramatic collagen increases that it achieves. He has been attending conferences for the past 30 years and has been following the various lasers and devices during this time and in his opinion these are the most impressive results that he’s seen with little or no downtime. Results of this magnitude usually involve significant downtime but the Sciton BBL Heroic achieves these results without downtime. It’s a credit to Dr. Jim Hobart and Dr. Dan Negus and their team who have dedicated their lives over many decades to the development of these fantastic lasers.
