XANTHELASMA

What is a xanthelasma?

A xanthelasma is a yellow small lump or plaque that occurs on the eyelids. It is formed by cholesterol deposition. However, this does not mean that the patient necessarily has high cholesterol. Patients don’t like them because they are unsightly although not dangerous.

How is a xanthelasma treated?

The classic treatment of xanthelasma involves the application of high strength TCA, a caustic peeling agent. Other treatment modalities include the application of phenol or fully ablative laser such as the Sciton Contour TRL erbium:YAG laser or a combination of both. Great care must be taken during these procedures to avoid injury to the cornea of the eye. Dr. Joe Murphy has performed many of these procedures over the past 30 years. One must warn the patient that they can experience recurrence of xanthelasma years after the procedure and a repeat procedure may be required at this time.
