SKs are a frequent benign skin finding. They are often familial. The problem is they can often mimic the appearance of melanoma. Careful examination with dermoscopy can distinguish between the two conditions. SKs often occur on the back but can be found on any part of the body. Once the doctor has confirmed with dermoscopy that they are definitely SKs then they can be efficiently treated with cryotherapy or curettage. Sometimes a pigmented SK will need to be biopsied to confirm its benign nature.
